Wise Words

Image

To know me is to know that I love sparkly things — a container of glitter or a box of sequins makes me very happy. And Saturday's Auction certainly fed my need for all things shimmery. Everyone looked amazing and sparkled in his or her own way.  There was so much love in the room that the energy seemed to make it glow.

We are an incredible community, and that was never more evident than on Saturday night. And, yes, the hotel was beautiful and the decorations were amazing... but the real reason we sparkled was because of why we gathered together in the first place —  to help NCRC stay true to a fundamental aspect of its mission: "to build and maintain an increasingly diverse environment in which every student, family and staff member feels welcome."  We certainly did that by all we raised for Tuition Assistance.

I have to say thank you for so many things. But thank you most of all for the incredible love you showed me — I will keep that memory close to my heart and it will remind me of all the magic that I have had the privilege to witness every day at NCRC.

The auction certainly was a spectacular event but it has also been a huge undertaking, requiring hours upon hours of effort. None of this would have been possible without the incredible leadership of our auction committee—as well as our Advancement team, especially Lindsay Rafayko. Thank you as well goes to Eleanor Alessi and Joan Hill for the countless hours that went into this successful event. Thank you all for your creativity, enthusiasm, and boundless energy over these past few months. This remarkable night would not have been possible without you!

Be confident in the knowledge that you helped to make an incredible difference in the life of a child and in making our community shine.

Panel Discussion (6:30-8:00pm)

NCRC as a school places a strong emphasis on being diverse and teaching diversity every day, however, diversity spills outside of the walls of Highland Place to our places of work and homes on a daily basis. How can we embrace diversity more completely so that we create the healthiest environment for our children and our families both in and outside of NCRC?

 Panel discusion topics will include:

  • Do children see/understand differences in terms of skin color, gender, family structure?
  •  Is it too early to discuss differences in preschool? What is the right age?
  • How does NCRC address diversity issues? What language do they use? How can we, as parents, use that language at home to reinforce this learning?

Moderated by Dr. Wise, the panel will include Dr. Norma L. Day-Vines, Professor of Counseling and Human Development in the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University and Alida Anderson, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the School of Education at American University.

More details to come on our speakers and possible additional topics but we hope to see many of you there!
