Dear Child Development Team...

Losing the Lunch Battle

Dear Child Development Team,

I have noticed that my child often comes home with much of her lunch still in her lunchbox. I try to pack food that I know she enjoys but frequently it seems like she hardly eats. Then, when she returns home from school at the end of the day she is grumpy and whiny and driving me crazy! Any suggestions?

-Exasperated Parent

Dear Exasperated Parent,

We frequently hear from parents who are disappointed that their child does not seem to eat much of their lunch. Keep in mind that many of the children at NCRC are still learning how to multi-task. That means they may love to chat and they may love to eat but they are still learning how to do both simultaneously and to have a conversation over lunch.  Below are some suggestions to help your child be a more efficient eater.

·       Engage your child in helping to prepare her or his lunch.

·       Give your child choices about what goes in their lunch.

·       Pack small portions.

·       Pack food in containers your child can easily open.

·       Pack only a few items but make sure to include protein, fruit and vegetables.

·       Avoid pre-sweetened drinks like squeeze tube yogurts and flavored milk. The sugar content makes those drinks appealing and some kids will forgo eating if they have a quick and easy sweet drink that makes them feel full for the moment.

·       Make as much of the food as possible 'finger food' that does not require adult assistance.

·       Finally, make sure your child receives a protein rich snack right after school to avoid the grumpies and getting hangry.

Keep us posted,
