Preparing for a Playdate Dear Child Development Team, My child has a peer in her classroom that has some speech and language challenges. My daughter seems to understand everything her friend says. However, I find it difficult to understand this child. We are having a play date next week and I am worried about not being able to help this child if she needs assistance. What is the best way for me to prepare for a successful play date?
Thank you, Worried Dad
Dear Worried Dad, You are already on the right track by asking for help. Check in with the parents of the child with the speech and language delays and ask them how to best meet her needs. You may want to ask about what the child says when she is hungry or needs the potty. Sometimes kids use approximations of words, words that sound like the words we use but with a unique twist such as photty for potty or cwacker for cracker. In addition, when the child is at your house, make sure to get down on her level when you speak with her and convey a stance of kindness and patience. Kids feel comfortable when adults project a feeling of acceptance. Using humor also helps. Let the child know that you are listening to her words but that your ears need more practice listening. Ask her to repeat what she is saying so she can 'help' your ears learn better.
Let us know how the play date goes!
