The Sandbox | March 7, 2018

Wise Words

The world has certainly changed since my three children were small enough to sit on my lap for a story. With the advent of technology and tools that make self-publishing as easy as sitting in front of a computer, the reading landscape has changed. And according to a study entitled "Once Upon a Time: Parent–Child Dialogue and Storybook Reading in the Electronic Era" published in "Mind, Brain, and Education," there are pros and cons. If used intentionally rather than as a way to keep a child occupied while busy parents get on with busy lives, ebooks can provide a larger world in which many more books are available to families than were available only a few decades ago. Hello to our Amazing NCRC Families!

The Admissions Team is excited to welcome new families to the NCRC community! Families who have applied to NCRC for the 2018/19 school year received notifications from Admissions this past Friday.

This year we are excited to host "Welcome to NCRC!" events for families who are considering NCRC for next year. This is an opportunity for parents to visit campus one more time ahead of making their family's final school decision. Time on campus will include a Meet & Greet, Classroom Tour and presentation about "Why NCRC?"

We invite all current families to the Meet and Greet portion which will take place on Thursday, March 8th (Tomorrow!)  & Tuesday, March 13th from 8:45 am - 9:05am outside the playhouse. Please join the Admissions Team in welcoming these new families!

Any questions please contact Janet Carter or Jessica Callahan.

Dear Child Development Team...

Q: What is executive function?

A: While the words 'executive function' may spark visions of Fortune 500 round tables or profit-sharing galas, this term, rooted in neuroscience, actually refers to a collection of cognitive and self-regulatory skills that we use to organize our thoughts, make plans, resist impulses, stay focused and balance our feelings with our actions. In a popular metaphor, Thomas E. Brown, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine, suggests, "if the brain is a symphony, then executive function is the conductor."
