The Sandbox | October 18, 2017

Children need that moment when they don't make the team or don't get the win. In an era when many are focused on not allowing children to fail, this supports what teachers have suggested for years - it's okay to fail. Indeed, you learn so much from it.

This week I re-listened to this podcast from TED Radio Hour and was reminded how great it was. I think every parent should give it a listen.

Enjoy!

Dear Ms. Judith

Dear Ms. Judith,

My son has a child with significant speech delays in his class. I want to invite this child for a play date but I have a hard time understanding him.

What questions should I ask his parents in order to be best prepared to host this child at my house?

Thank you,

Enthusiastic Parent

Dear Enthusiastic Parent,

What a great question and thank you for reaching out. I would suggest that you are honest with his parents about your concerns. Ask them to fill you in regarding their son's way of asking for help, or his way of letting adults know that he needs to go to the potty. You might want to be prepared by stocking up on his favorite foods but making sure that you know what he calls those foods. In addition, make sure that you are aware of any textures that he may not like or be able to swallow. Sometimes kids with speech delays also have some swallowing challenges that are not apparent to the rest of us. Finally, ask his parents if he uses any sign language to communicate his wants or needs. Knowing those signs can help to insure that the playdate goes smoothly.

Have a great time and let me know how it goes!
